Collective Antiques of San
Mateo is located at 55 East Third Avenue, San Mateo, California. This outstanding
historic English Tutor building, with its gabled tile roof, board, batten and brick
design, with stately columns announcing the grand entrance, shares the essence of
time with each visitor to the store, and graces the downtown with its ambience of
quality. Stepping inside the store, the visitor will be delighted with the wonderful
interior design, from the first floor entrance to a view of the beautiful matching
set of stairs joining at the balcony landing, and then ascending a short flight
of stairs to the second floor mezzanine. The archway under the stair balcony opens
to another impressive entrance leading to the rear Collective Antiques customer
parking lot. The immense skylight in the center of the building illuminates the
store in a comfortable natural light. In the heart of downtown San Mateo, the building
was originally built in the early 1900s for Levy Brothers Department stores as their
flagship store. The building is now registered by the National Historic Building
Registry. Another historic building, the Ben Franklin Hotel, is directly across
the street.
Today the building houses The Collective Antique Store, which was established
at that site 30 years ago, in 1976. The Original owner and founder, Tony
Barbera, established a very fine quality antique store with a selection of formal
and country antiques from America, France and England, all presented in attractive
room settings. The store prospered with Tony’s strict adherence to quality
and authenticity. The Collective Antiques became well known to homeowners,
interior decorators and designers from San Francisco and the San Francisco Peninsula.
Over the years, many families furnished their entire homes from The Collective Antiques
and have returned to find pieces for the homes of their children and grandchildren.
The timeless pieces have in time, grown in value and become a part of the value
of their estate.
Tony Barbera retired in 2000, and Merry-Lee, Steve and Tony Musich took
over daily operations. The long time tradition of quality and authenticity
Tony Barbera had established continues today. Many of the 52 dealers who are
currently at The Collective Antiques store originally started with Tony Barbera. The
18,000 square foot store contains an unequaled selection of formal and country antiques
from America, France and England, with the addition of Asian Furniture, and an exquisite
selection of Fine Antique Art and Sculpture. There is also an exceptional selection
of Oriental Rugs and Tapestries. Smaller items include accessories, china,
crystal, silver, jewelry and collectibles.
Each dealer at The Collective Antiques is knowledgeable in the style
and period of the furnishings they carry and all are available to answer
customer questions. The beautiful collection showcased at The Collective Antiques
store reflects the care and devotion of our dealers. The Manager, Kathy Indicks,
and a knowledgeable staff will be able to answer questions and assist customers
and contact dealers if necessary. If you are unable to find what you need,
a wish list for the dealers to assist you is available. New inventory arrives weekly.
Decorators and Designers are always welcome at Collective Antiques.
